Ancient Rock Carvings of Tripura

Tripura Signature Journey

We take you to the scenic places

The origin of the name Tripura remains a subject of debate among historians and researchers. According to the Rajmala, the royal chronicle of Tripura, the kingdom was named after an ancient king named Tripur, who is believed to have ruled the region in ancient times.
The word Tripura is believed to be derived from the indigenous terms ‘tui’ (water) and ‘pra’ (near), collectively meaning “land near water.” This explanation is supported by the state’s geographical setting, which lies in close proximity to the extensive water bodies of eastern Bengal, as well as by the traditional identity of its indigenous people, known as Tipra or Twipra.
